Year by Year History of the SPFL

The Innaugural Season took place in 1996, named the Great Plains Football League and consisted of:

  • River Hills Posse- Mankato
  • Borderline Bandits-Ceylon
  • Martin County Bulls-Fairmont
  • Minnesota Stallions-Windom
  • Wanton County Outlaws-St. James

The First Championship Game

Rivver Hills Posse (30) VS Borderline Bandits (22)

In 1997 the GPFL grew to 7 teams:

  • Rivver Hills Posse-relocated to Truman
  • Borderline Bandits
  • Martin County Bulls
  • Minnesota Stallions
  • Blue Earth Bombers-Blue Earth
  • Mankato Warriors-Mankato
  • Buffalo Ridge Wildcats-Lake Benton

2nd GPFL Championship

Blue Earth Bombers (28) VS River Hills Posse (21)

In 1998 the league changes its name to the Southern Plains Football League.  Under Jay and Jeff Balcom the SPFL grew to 8 teams:

  • River Hills Posse
  • Borderline Bandits
  • Martin County Bulls
  • Buffalo Ridge Wildcats
  • Mankato Warriors
  • Blue Earth Bombers
  • Jackson County Thunder-Jackson
  • Welcome Wolfpack-Trimont

3rd Championship Game (1st Official SPFL Championship)

In 1999 the SPFL grew to 11 teams:

  • River Hills Posse

  • Mankato Warriors

  • Welcome Wolfpack
  • Northfield Thundering Herd

4th Championship Game

Buffalo Ridge Wildcats (21) VS Blue Earth Bombers (8)

In 2000 the SPFL drops to 8 teams

  • Mankato Rage-Removed from the League
  • Dakota Lawdawgs-Removed from the League
  • Martin County Bulls-Drop out
  • Jackson County thunder-Drop out
  • River Hills Posse-Drop out
  • Minnesota Maulers-Enter League
  • Elmore Wildcats-Enter League
  • Borderline Bandits change name and location to Estherville Raiders-Estherville, IA
  • Northfield Thundering Herd change location to Cannon Falls

2000 SPFL Teams:

1st SPFL All-Star Game

In 2001 SPFL grows to 12 teams:

  • Elmore-removed from League
  • Southwest Sharks-Enter League
  • Minneapolis Legends-Enter League
  • Dakota County Bulldogs-Enter League
  • Owatonna Indians-Enter League
  • River Hills Posse, Lake Crystal- Return to League

Two Divisions are formed with 6 teams in each

Northern Division

  • Minneapolis Legends

  • Dakota County Bulldogs
  • Mankato Warriors

  • Minnesota Maulers

Southern Division

In 2002 the SPFL drops to 11 teams causing re-alignment of the Divisions.
